This page presents a rough timeline of activities undertaken by school nurse participating in the program.
August – September (Start of School Year)
- Identify students with asthma and determine how well controlled it is,
- Training and educating teachers and UAPs about asthma
Using the Asthma Intake Form helps identify students & determine level of control.
October – November (Care Plans & Inhalers)
- Get an appropriate “care plan” (emergency care plan) on record for each student with asthma
- Ensure each student has access to needed medications & inhalers
- Assess and train students on inhaler usage
- Monitor and record how often students use inhalers and what triggers usage
Opportunities
- Get care plans electronically from doctors (link)
- Explain to providers why the care plan is needed, and what to include
- Get access to student health records
- Update families and providers about triggers and levels of control
December – March (Ongoing Care)
- Assess and train students on inhaler usage
- Monitor and record how often students use inhalers and what triggers usage
Opportunities
- Teach students, teachers and staff about asthma
- Raise awareness of triggers
- Encourage engagement with asthma educational resources
April – May (End of School Year)
Send requests for updated care plans to families (Typically when the program/ grant training takes place)
